Jackson County Department on Aging Continuing to Deliver Meals on Wheels

Meals are continuing to be delivered to seniors at their home. This includes meals to seniors who normally are not homebound but need to stay home and reduce their risk of COVID-19 exposure. Seniors are receiving the number of meals they normally receive, and seven emergency meals have been provided. Staff are preparing to change to all frozen meals delivered once a week, starting April 1st . To begin meal delivery for someone age 60 and older, call the Department on Aging, 788-4364. Participants have the option of donating for their meals; making a donation is not required.

    Beginning Saturday, March 21, 2020 until further notice, their plan is to utilize a drive-thru distribution model beginning at 8:30am this Saturday and will end at 12 noon. This model necessitates distributing prepacked shelf stable food bags, and if possible, supplementing with fresh produce, bread and meat. Guests receiving food will remain outdoors and in their vehicle.

      Saturday, March 28th our other community food pantries will take place at:

      There is no need for you to get out of your vehicle as the food filled bags will be brought directly to you.

      Can visit pantry every 60 days, not planning on changing this criteria. With an ID and note, someone else can receive food if person is unable. When they arrive, they fill out application, then pick up box which is put together based on number of people in family. Short on meat.

      Only require a valid ID.  Distribution in still the same process - people come in and go through line to get food in their upstairs rooms, people will be let through 5 at a time and they pick out their own food. Having trouble getting meats food. Don't have capacity to deliver. Have always put limits on items due to the fact they receive them from store rescue - bread/dessert, meats, 1 cereal, veggies 2, fruit 1, choice of a snack.

        Just bring one ID for every person and eligible every 30 days. Provide meals for 3 days (breakfast, lunch and dinner for # people in each household). Dish soap, laundry soap and shampoo breaking down into smaller bottles to give to people.

        Only covers Michigan Center, Napoleon, Grass Lake. Helpline is monitored and will call an individual back. Fridays sends email request for food delivery and Consumer's Energy request. Food deliveries are made the next week. Eligibility - asks how many in household, anyone employed or source of income, or receive DHHS assistance. Volunteer run pantry so they only do deliveries of prepackaged food items, canned goods, box items, and meat bundle, toilet paper and other household goods.


        Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church

        Must show proof of ID living in Western Jackson County (Brown St.). Normally would not deliver to people but they have volunteers who have offered to get groceries for people and think if someone needed a deliver they could be grouped with them. Boxes are already ready, need to come in to fill out paperwork.

        Deliver food to homes (mostly downtown area and east of Michigan Ave, southside of Jackson) Michigan Ave to S. Jackson and Cooper St.Take calls everyday 9am-11am and deliver M-F. In most cases will make same day deliveries unless call is received later, and then will the next day. Deliver to door. Use a team of 2 people a day for deliveries.


        St. Vincent de Paul Society - St. Joe's

        Call to set up appointment, ask for name, phone number and address. Delivers food on T/TH

        Only serves northeast corner in city of Jackson. Keeps track if people have been helped in the last 3 months. Provides food to last a family of 4 for 3 days (3 packages of meat per delivery, non-perishable, etc), 1 dozen eggs and 12 oz brick of cheese always, shelf stable milk, pancake mix always, cereal always, at least 3 bread items, also include a bag with paper and cleaning products, soap, toothpaste, etc. When it's not an emergency ask income requirements, but will never not give a first box to someone even if they're over income.

        Currently pre-boxing items and people have to come in. They're limiting how many people can come in at a time. No eligibility requirements, don't need an ID to receive items. Don't have any cleaning supplies at this time.

          Tuesday/Thursday 9am-12pm.  People are still able to come through lines and fill up their carts. Require that they live in that location to receive food and must live in Hanover Horton school district. Limits on how much they can take total (2 bags of food unless more than 4 people in family), limiting cereal and paper products. In specific cases would be able to make deliveries. Have talked about the idea of having people stay in their cars and give them a box but haven't done so yet.

            Christ’s Kingdom Ministries

            Open, Only 10 people at one time inside.  People can pick up food for someone else if they're unable to come, just must show ID. Food will be pre-bagged and they come in sign an FDA required form.  Bring their ID, they don't check income guidelines, someone just has to say they're in need of emergency food. Not limiting items and have no shortages. Only provide food, not household supplies. Have a list of other organization to refer to if necessary.

            Meals on Wheels is still delivering meals to seniors. The meals are frozen and they deliver a seven day supply. Meals on Wheels are taking new clients that are in need of food delivery. Refer them to call the office to register.  517-437-2422
